Project overview: Offer free bike rentals as a clean transportation alternative for thousands of visitors in Yosemite Valley by hiring two Bike Share attendants to maintain the new bike fleet, support the visitor experience, and increase the fleet size from 30 to 75 bikes.
How your support helps: Traffic jams are a common occurrence in Yosemite Valley during busy summer months, with cars inching toward parking spots, campgrounds, and trailheads. As the park actively explores options for addressing congestion and traffic flow in the Valley, the Yosemite Bike Share program offers a way to reduce the number of cars on the roads: two-wheeled, people-powered transit.
Yosemite Bike Share launched in 2018 as a Conservancy-funded pilot project to help people get around the Valley in the summer without having to get in their cars. Instead of relying on vehicles for quick trips or errands, Bike Share users can use a mobile app to unlock a bicycle, cruise on flat paths, and avoid busy roads and parking areas — all at zero cost to the rider!
In 2025, the program celebrated five years by replacing its aging fleet of bikes with an all-new fleet of steel bikes. While steel bikes are more durable and safer for visitor use, the transition came with novel maintenance costs and required the program to switch partner companies for bike manufacturing, the phone app software, and the bike locks.
2025 was a year of transition; swapping out the entire fleet of bikes was a huge undertaking, but it set the program up for a great year in 2026. This year will mark the first full season of the new fleet of stronger, more comfortable bikes, which will provide thousands of rides to Yosemite visitors in and around the Valley.
This year: In 2026, funds will support the employment of two part-time, seasonal Bike Share Attendants who will assist visitors in “renting” bikes, rebalance the fleet between hub locations, and answer many visitor questions. With your support, the Yosemite Bike Share team will expand the fleet from 30 to 75 bikes in 2026 and will continue offering a fun, environmentally friendly alternative to driving.
