Sustain Yosemite’s People

It is critical that we amplify diverse voices that have shaped the park to ensure today’s visitors work to protect it for future generations, and build infrastructure — starting with housing — to support employees and volunteers.

Elevating Tribal Voices

The seven Tribes traditionally associated with Yosemite have stewarded the land for millennia and are vital to the park’s future.

We will:

Consult with Tribal representatives on preservation projects and provide more ways for visitors to learn about the Tribes’ connections to the park.

Fund the restoration of Wahhoga Indian Cultural site as a place of healing, celebration, and education.

Building Infrastructure

Yosemite faces a severe housing crisis, with over 200 housing units lost recently to short-term vacation rentals and wildfires.  Rising rental prices and long commutes from neighboring communities have made it difficult for staff to secure affordable, local housing, leading to one-third of National Park Service positions remaining vacant in Yosemite. NPS Director Chuck Sams has cited staff housing as the top priority for the park service.

The Conservancy owns a 37-acre parcel in Yosemite West, adjacent to the park boundary.

This parcel is an appealing location for up to 100 new, affordable housing units for NPS rangers, seasonal employees, volunteers, and staff.

Investing in housing will benefit park employees, as well as the millions of visitors they serve, for generations into the future.
