Enrich the Visitor Experience

For more than 100 years, Yosemite Conservancy has supported the conservation of Yosemite’s natural and cultural resources and helped people develop deep ties to the park. What began with the establishment of the Yosemite Museum in 1923 has grown into a dynamic array of programs, volunteer opportunities, and cornerstone projects that enhance the visitor experience for millions each year.

Yosemite is home to some of the most popular trails in the country. And the Mist Trail and Half Dome Corridor, specifically, are one of the most spectacular and busy hiking areas in the National Park System. With unforgettable views of Vernal and Nevada Falls, this trail attracts more than 90,000 visitors per month in the summertime — and is due for critical upgrades to improve safety and wayfinding along the route.

Refreshing the Mist Trail

Due to steep and often slippery terrain, crowded paths, and limited visitor information, this area prompts more search and rescue activity than any other part of the park. To address existing challenges, this project will:

Improve safety through trail upgrades, innovative engineering, and updated messaging to reduce preventable accidents.

Redesign pedestrian access by reconfiguring the busy trailhead area and enhancing viewing areas below Vernal Fall.

Revamp informational signs, with an emphasis on providing clear wayfinding and safety guidance and encouraging people to learn about Tribal history and perspectives.
