Thank you to everyone who participated in our Watching Wildlife photo contest last month! Congratulations to our winner, Kim Lemster, whose shot of a black bear stretching its limbs took the top spot, followed closely by Amy George’s image of a red-tailed hawk clutching a freshly caught meal. (Scroll down to see their photos, and some of the other images that were submitted.)
The photos you shared showed animals at home in their natural habitats, going about their routines, some of which struck us as similar to things our own species might do on a typical day. You captured them …
… heading out for a walk
… grabbing a meal
… hanging with friends
… getting in some “me” time
… stopping by a local branch
… drying off after a swim
… and people-watching, observing humans with curiosity and care.
Each glimpse of Yosemite’s wildlife, whether in person or in a photograph, is an important reminder of the diverse animals that depend on the park, and of our role in ensuring that their home remains healthy and protected. Store food in lockers and canisters to help make sure animals can keep a wild diet. Minimize your impact on their habitats, by staying on trails, packing out litter, and camping and cooking away from water. If you’re watching wildlife, remember to keep your distance.
You can help Yosemite animals when you’re far from the park, too, by supporting our annual wildlife projects.
Thanks again to everyone who shared photos for our contest — keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feeds for more opportunities to submit your Yosemite pictures and stories!
