Black Bear
Despite their name, most of Yosemite’s 300 – 500 black bears are brown or blond. They eat berries, insects and acorns; in the fall, they consume as many as 20,000 calories daily to prepare for hibernation. Conservancy donors have helped keep Yosemite’s bears wild by funding grants for bear-proof food lockers and for GPS technology to monitor the animals’ movements.
