Yosemite is the story and reason behind my immigration to America. On a chance trip to Los Angeles, I ended up meeting folks who encouraged me to join them on a trip to Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes. Without any prior knowledge of the National Park system or ever seeing photos of Yosemite, I was in disbelief when my group stopped for a picture at Tunnel View. I still remember that day as the happiest day of my life. I could not believe that what I see in front of me is real, not a Photoshop or artist’s rendition. That day, I prayed, wished and hoped that one day I’ll return to this country only to enjoy such beautiful places time and again.
Since that fateful day, I was able to come here and find a path to permanent residency in this country. I’ve been paying homage to my cathedral — Yosemite — every year since then. I’ve seen the park in all seasons, have climbed Half Dome multiple times and backpacked the John Muir Trail and other wonderful sierra wilderness only because I fell in love with Yosemite and the park system. Since then, I’ve visited at least 30 National Parks and hope to finish the remaining ~33 in the next few years. I remain a National Park lover, steward and advocate for the park system. I hope to one day return to Yosemite as a volunteer or park ranger in my “retirement age”. Until then, Yosemite and I remain in love — with eternal love for that first sight of Yosemite.
