Choosing a trailhead

Yosemite Wilderness has over 750 miles of trail to explore!

Read the trail descriptions to see what aligns best with your goals, timeframe, and abilities. Trail descriptions include trailhead locations by region, highlights (like waterfalls or lakes), trailhead names, permit demand, approximate distances, and elevation gain.

Example:

You decide you want to go to a waterfall in a quiet area of the park during your backpacking trip.

  1. With your objective in mind, open the trail descriptions page to read about each region.
    1. Wawona sounds quiet!
  2. Select the region to learn about trails in that area.
  3. Read the descriptions and decide on a trail that describes what you want.
    1. Chilnualna Falls fits in with your objective!*Note the name of the trailhead; you’ll need this when you make a reservation.*Remember to check distance and elevation gain to make sure it’s within your timeframe and abilities!

 


 

Locating your trailhead

Use the Wilderness Trailheads Map to locate your trailhead.

In this example, we can locate the Chilnualna Falls trailhead using the key provided. The trailhead is indicated by the number 36.

Trailhead Parking

There is parking at or near each trailhead unless otherwise noted.

For information about parking at your trailhead, food lockers, and toilets, visit Yosemite National Park’s Trailhead Information Page.

➡️ Store all scented items that you are not carrying with you in the provided communal food lockers at the trailhead. Food lockers cannot be locked.

➡️ Parking permits are not provided, nor are they necessary to park at a trailhead.

➡️ Overnight parking is prohibited on both Glacier Point and Tioga Roads beginning on October 15. This includes all parking lots, turnouts, and side roads. You may not leave your vehicle at any trailhead along Tioga or Glacier Point Road beginning October 15.

➡️ You must arrange your own transportation for drop-off and pick-up at any trailhead on Glacier Point or Tioga Road. Public transportation is not available at that time.
