12 Eastern Madera County schools and libraries each receive several copies ofbest-selling titles authored and/or edited by former YA President Steven Medley

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, May 30, 2007 – The legacy of Steven Medley, beloved leader of the non-profit Yosemite Association (YA) for 22 years before he tragically passed away in 2006, lives on through a donation of 180 books to local Eastern Madera County schools and libraries. The donation, with a retail value of $1,900, was made possible by a joint partnership between the Yosemite Association and Oakhurst Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club.

The idea to hand select best-selling titles from the vast inventory of books published by the Yosemite Association, which were either authored and/or edited personally by Steven Medley, was generated by his youngest son Andy Medley. Together with Tony McLean, President of the Oakhurst Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club and a long-time friend of the Medley family, they spearheaded the donation tribute, for which the Rotary Club contributed $500. The balance of expenses was contributed by the Yosemite Association.

“Steve was deeply committed to YA’s book publishing division and to educating the world about Yosemite,” explained Beth Pratt, Interim President for YA. “He was an outstanding author and editor, and he would be very pleased to know that local schools and libraries will be enjoying his favorite books for many, many years.”

Donated book titles that were authored by Medley include: The Complete Guidebook to Yosemite National Park; Waterfalls of Yosemite; and Antelope, Bison, Cougars: A National Park Wildlife Alphabet Book. Other titles, which Medley contributed to and/or edited include: An Illustrated Flora of Yosemite National Park; Yosemite’s JuniorRanger Handbook; Stella and Roy Go Camping; Sierra Campfire Yarns; The Tree of Time;  Two Bear Cubs: A Miwok Legend from California’s Yosemite Valley; The Wild Muir; 22 of John Muir’s Greatest Adventures; Fur and Loafing in Yosemite – A Collection of ‘Farley’ Cartoons set in Yosemite National Park; Missing in the Minarets: The Search for Walter A. Starr, Jr; Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada; One Hundred Years in Yosemite; A Journal of Ramblings Through the High Sierras of California; Discovery of The Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada Field Card Set.

A ceremony to distribute the books was made on May 24 at the Wasuma Elementary School in Ahwahnee, California. In attendance were: Beth Pratt, Interim President of the Yosemite Association; Tony McLean, President of the Oakhurst Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club; plus principals, county librarians, teachers and students representing the 14 locations receiving the books.

Recipients of the book donation included: Bass Lake Elementary School, Oakhurst Elementary, Coarsegold Elementary, North Fork Elementary, Raymond-Knowles Elementary, Rivergold Elementary, Spring Valley School, Wasuma Elementary, Wawona Elementary, Yosemite High School, Chawanakee Academy, Oakhurst Community Library and North Fork Library.

Established in 1923, the Yosemite Association was the nation’s first cooperating association in our national parks and serves as a benchmark for similar organizations nationwide.  In collaboration with the National Park Service and authorized by Congress, YA supports interpretive, educational, research, scientific and environmental programs in Yosemite National Park through publishing, retail sales, seminars, visitor services, volunteer programs and other outreach.  Each year the popular Yosemite Association Outdoor Adventures courses offer a wide variety of in-depth classes and outdoor experiences from Yosemite’s natural and human history to backpacking, photography and writing.
