Yosemite Flora Wins National Award

The New York Botanical Garden recently announced that the comprehensive flora for Yosemite National Park written by Stephen J. Botti and illustrated by Walter Sydoriak has been honored with the organization's Henry Allan Gleason Award for 2003.

Each year the group presents the award for an outstanding publication in the field of plant taxonomy, plant ecology, or plant geography. Botti and Sydoriak's book is titled An Illustrated Flora of Yosemite National Park and published by the non-profit Yosemite Association in Yosemite National Park.

The award was presented at the Botanical Society of America Banquet held at the Botany 2003 Conference in Mobile, Alabama.

Judges noted that the Yosemite flora combines excellence in both plant taxonomy and plant ecology, successfully bringing these two areas together in its focus on the conservation and use by the public at large.

Dennis Wm. Stevenson, Vice President and Rupert Barneby Curator for Botanical Science at The New York Botanical Garden, noted that the winning publications are chosen "for accuracy, content, value to the users community, and also in most cases quality of illustrations."

Illustrator Walter Sydoriak prepared over 1,100 watercolor paintings of flowering plants for the book - a task that took almost twenty years to complete. His work was supplemented by several hundred black-and-white line drawings of the grasses, sedges, and rushes that were undertaken by Lesley Randall.

In 2002, the Yosemite flora was recognized by the Director of the National Park Service with an "Award of Excellence" in interpetive media in the natural history category.

The Yosemite Association is a small, non-proft publisher, whose revenues are used to support educational, research, and environmental programs at Yosemite National Park.
