As part of its
educational mission, the Yosemite Association will offer the Yosemite Children's
Literature Conference from October 31 through November 2, 2003. Participants
will explore the world of children's literature in a gathering of talented
authors, illustrators, and publishers at beautiful Tenaya Lodge and Yosemite
National Park.
The conference features a distinguished list of presenters. Award wining Chicano poet and educator Francisco X. Alarcón will discuss his bilingual poetry books, which include Iguanas in the Snow and Other Winter Poems, and From the Bellybutton of the Moon and Other Summer Poems. Author Diane Matcheck's first young adult novel Sacrifice was named an ALA Best Book, a Junior Library Guild Selection, and a Booklist Top 10 Young Adult Novel.
Many young readers
have delighted in Ashley Wolff's Stella & Roy Go Camping,
which chronicles a fictional camping trip in Yosemite. Dan San Souci
has illustrated over fifty books for young readers, including Two Bear
Cubs: A Miwok Legend. Other speakers include Angelica Carpenter,
curator of The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature in
Fresno, and Steven Medley, President and Publishing Director of the
Yosemite Association.
Michael Ross,
the conference coordinator, has written and illustrated over 40 books including
award winners, Exploring the Earth with John Wesley Powell, The
Happy Camper Handbook, and Cricketology. He also teaches writing
workshops for CSU Fresno and other colleges. His goal for the conference is
to "celebrate the important body of work that exists in children's literature
and inspire new creations to help our children learn."
Besides the diverse
workshops, readings, and sessions on the conference schedule, participants
will also be able to explore Yosemite by taking advantage of the special interpretive
programs provided by park naturalists for the conference. Walks through the
Mariposa Grove of Big Trees and the Pioneer History Center will complement
the other offerings.
