Second Annual Yosemite Winter Literary Conference to Feature Gary Snyder and Maxine Hong Kingston.

Pulitzer-Prize winner Gary Snyder, and noted author Maxine Hong Kingston join a nationally recognized list of writers at the Second Annual Yosemite Winter Literary Conference to be held February 24-28, 2002 at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park.

The conference is designed for a variety of interest levels, from curious students and committed readers of western literature, to aspiring and accomplished writers. Its goal is to attract and introduce readers, devotees of natural splendor, writers, and other artists to Yosemite, where they will experience and enjoy Muir's "Range of Light" in winter, and join in a fascinating community of prominent literary figures.

Pulitzer Prize winner Gary Snyder has authored almost twenty books, most notably Turtle Island, and Mountain and Rivers Without End. His engaging work focuses on his range of experiences (ranger, logger, seaman) in the natural world along with his studies of eastern philosophies. Maxine Hong Kingston, author of Woman Warrior and China Men, writes about her growing up the daughter of Chinese immigrants, blending fact and fiction to address the important issues of racism and sexism.

The list of presenters also includes Chicano poet Francisco Alarcón; award-winning writer Pam Houston; noted poet Jane Hirshfield; California author and organic farmer David Mas Masumoto; and publisher of Heyday Books, Malcolm Margolin.

Through workshops, panel discussions, readings and informal sessions, participants will celebrate and explore the literary landscape of California, the Sierra Nevada, and the American West with a distinguished group of writers, artists, photographers, and scientists. Sessions will also include ranger-led interpretive programs and winter outdoor activities.

The site of the conference is the magnificent Ahwahnee Hotel, a National Historic Landmark and one of the grand lodges in the national park system.

The Yosemite Winter Literary Conference is sponsored by the Yosemite Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of Yosemite National Park, in conjunction with the John Muir Institute for the Environment, UC Davis, and Yosemite Concession Services, Inc.
