Fire
near Lee Vining grows to 2,000 acres
A fire in Horse Canyon near Lee Vining grew rapidly Monday, expanding from 150 acres early in the day to 2,000 acres by nightfall, dispatchers at the Interagency (U.S. Forest Service and federal Bureau of Land Management) Dispatch in Bishop reported. The fire appeared to threaten the Lee Vining ranger station and Mobile Mart gas station earlier in the day, but all of the small community's structures were secured by the evening, the dispatcher said. A dispatcher said winds appear to be the main reason for the fire's spread. She didn't say whether the fire was under control but added that as many as 220 firefighters from five Owens Valley conservation crews are battling the blaze. Lee Vining is a small community on Highway 120 east of Yosemite National Park. The dispatcher said the wind in Bishop was blowing 20 mph Monday. |
