Badger Pass Opens Today -- Without Nic Fiore

California's oldest ski resort schusses into its 70th season today with good snow conditions but missing one of its most popular attractions.

Legendary ski instructor Nic Fiore, a fixture at Yosemite's Badger Pass since 1948, will not bring his trademark enthusiasm and personality to the slopes this year because of failing health. The 84-year-old Fiore underwent heart surgery in February and is living in a Fresno retirement community.

"Most people that return here year after year are looking for Nic Fiore. Even though he's not here anymore, he will always be here in spirit," said Badger Pass operations manager Colin Baldock.

Thanks to last week's storm, which brought 2 feet of snow, Badger Pass will open with better-than-average coverage for mid-December. Base depths range from 2 to 5 feet, Baldock said.

"A Remarkable Woman," Yosemite Historian Shirley Sargent Dies at 77

In a place known for world-class rock climbing, backpacking and other physically strenuous activities, Shirley Sargent made her mark from a wheelchair. Typing with one finger, she wrote books about Yosemite National Park, a home she held in love and reverence.

Shirley died December 3rd at age 77 in Mariposa, just west of the park. She spent most of her adult life living in Yosemite's Foresta area, two miles from her nearest neighbor.

Suffering the effects of a neurological disorder called dystonia for much of her life, she had body tremors and had to hold one hand steady with the other as she typed. It didn't stop her from writing about two dozen books about the park and emerging as the preeminent park historian.
