| How Are Things in Tuolumne Meadows? |
 |
The Tuolumne Meadows winter rangers for 2003-04
have started to file reports on snow conditions,
weather, wildlife sightings, and more. Bruce and Tracey
are spending the snowy season far away from traffic
and crowds, and they share their experiences about
once each week.
We are posting the Tuolumne reports in the "Diary"
section of our web site. Check in often to see what
you're missing in Yosemite's high country, what wildlife
is haunting the meadows, and what kind of winter
weather we're having this year. (Photo courtesy of

| Human-Bear Incidents Still on Decline in Yosemite |
 |
Efforts to protect bears in Yosemite continue to meet
with success. There have been 390 human-bear
incidents this year, a figure that is down 30%
from last year and 75% from 1998 when human-bear
incidents reached a peak with 1,584 incidents.
An incident is defined as any situation in which a bear
displays habituated behavior. This includes property
damage caused by a bear, a bear obtaining human
food, a bluff charge, or personal injury from a bear.
Park officials attribute these encouraging results to a
comprehensive effort to maintain a wild bear population
in Yosemite through bear management practices and
public education. A major education initiative, the Wild
Bear Project, was established in 1999 to respond to
increasing human-bear interactions.
The Yosemite Association has worked cooperatively
with the National Park Service and DNC Parks & Resorts
at Yosemite (the main park concessioner) on the Wild
Bear Project, and we're thrilled to see that it has had
such beneficial effects. We send thanks and
appreciation to our members and supporters who
have helped us protect bears in Yosemite! (Photo by
