Organic, Sustainable Foods Now Used in Yosemite Restaurants
    .
If you like organic and sustainably harvested food, study the menus of high-end restaurants in Yosemite National Park. They are adding your favorite fare -- and hinting at what's to come in food courts and camp kitchens.

At The Ahwahnee, you'll likely find organic pork tenderloin and other meat that hasn't been genetically modified or treated with hormones and antibiotics. Or you could find Alaskan line-caught halibut, a sustainable food harvested in a way that conserves natural resources.

What's happening in some kitchens in the park is a fraction of a larger environmental program called Project 21, the brainchild of Delaware North Companies, which manages hospitality and food service in locations such as Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yellowstone National Park in Montana and the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia.

On park menus you'll find this statement: "We are proud to present our seasonal dinner menu featuring many organic items and sustainably harvested products. This enables us to advance our environmental initiatives beyond recycling programs."

"We look to Yosemite to be the leader in lots of issues," says John Huey of DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, who adds that Yosemite's environmental programs became a model for the rest of the DNC companies.

Thomas Hill Book is Half Price for a Limited Time!
    .
Yosemite artist Thomas Hill's smaller works in oil, painted in the field directly from nature, represent some of his finest achievements and include subjects as diverse as Yosemite, the White Mountains, and Alaska.

The remarkable book published by the Yosemite Association about these impressive paintings is being offered for a limited time for 50% off its normal retail price of $19.95. Entitled Direct From Nature: The Oil Sketches of Thomas Hill, the paperback volume is printed in full color and reproduces a large array of Hill's work from all over the United States.

Besides the paintings, the book (a cooperative project with the Crocker Art Museum of Sacramento) includes one of the most thorough biographies of Thomas Hill available, a chronology of his life, and an essay about oil sketches in the history of American art by noted art historian William Gerdts.

    Wilderness T-Shirts Won't Last Forever
    .
A special t-shirt to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act was recently developed by the Yosemite Association. It's selling like beer to disconsolate fans at a '49er game.

Available in both long- and short-sleeved versions that are mocha brown and garment-washed, the shirt features a full-color reproduction from a wood block print by Chiura Obata entitled 'Clouds, Upper Lyell Trail' and dated 1930. The type above and below the image reads: "Sierra Nevada Wilderness - Celebrating Forty Years of Protection."

Because the shirt was produced for this special event, we aren't going to keep it in inventory much longer. That's why you need to order now if you want to own one of these unique shirts.

Remember, with your Yosemite Association 15% member discount you can buy the long-sleeved tee (regularly $20) for only $17 and the short-sleeved tee (regularly $16) for only $13.60. Get one while they last.....

Exhibit of Julia Parker Baskets in Walnut Creek
Yosemite's Julia Parker is widely regarded as one of California's best makers of baskets, and a leading elder of the American Indian community. The first retrospective of her work, "The Past in Present Tense: Four Decades of Julia Parker Baskets," is continuing at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek through October 31.

People who have seen Parker in action -- she's been teaching basket-weaving, acorn cooking, and other cultural arts at Yosemite for 40 years, and regularly brings her show to Point Reyes National Seashore and other venues -- say her work is not to be missed.

At age 20, Parker created her first basket. Today her baskets are highly prized and in many public collections. "They are scattered like seeds all over California," says Deborah Valoma, curator of the exhibit. More than 100 examples are in the show.

The Bedford Gallery is located at 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek. Entrance is $3, $2 under 17; free for 12 and under. Free to all noon-5 p.m. Tuesdays and to ticket holders for events at the Regional Center on the day of the event. The phone is (925) 943-7469.
