| Fall Outdoor Adventures |
Spaces remain in two Outdoor Adventures courses for 2007. October 19-21, participants in artist Andie Thrams' "Forest Illuminations" course in Yosemite Valley will spend contemplative time with the park's great trees. A goal is to capture some of the rich autumn magic of the mountains in an illustrated field journal. December 8 is a day for beginning and veteran birders to focus their binoculars on just the woodpeckers. YA naturalist Pete Devine leads a quest to see as many of the eleven Sierran species as you can by visiting diverse forest types.

| Yosemite Renaissance XXIII Call for Entries |
The Yosemite Renaissance Juried Exhibition is an annual competition/exhibition intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations. Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is our hope that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.
Subject matter is limited to recent works on the landscape, environment, wildlife, and people of Yosemite or the Sierra. Both representational and non-representational submissions are accepted. Entries may be in any fine art medium including painting, photography, drawing, and printmaking, textile and sculpture. Initial entries by slide or digital file are due by December 1, 2007. Up to 40 pieces will be selected for exhibition. Please visit www.yosemiterenaissance.org for details and entry forms, or send SASE to Yosemite Renaissance, P.O. Box 767, Yosemite, CA 95389.

| The Centennial Initiative for Yosemite |
Sixteen projects in Yosemite were certified as eligible for funding in Fiscal Year 2008, including the Yosemite Association (YA) advancing the Junior Ranger Program by producing multi-lingual handbooks; the University of California (UC) Merced Leadership Program (including student interns); and multi-cultural field seminars. The Yosemite Fund and Yosemite Institute also had many exciting projects certified in this process.
For these projects to move forward, federal funding in the budget is essential, yet the federal budget process is unclear. California Senator Feinstein is the chair of the Interior Appropriations Committee and Senator Boxer will also be key to secure funding for these projects. YA has joined the other Yosemite park partners in letters urging the California Senators to support funding for the Centennial Initiative. Your voice is also very important. We recommend a simple letter to the Senators urging them to support our National Parks and to provide federal funding for the Centennial Initiative and Challenge. These letters can be sent or calls made to:

YA Mourns the Loss of Cartoonist Emeritus Phil Frank |
On September 12, 2007, YA Cartoonist Emeritus Phil Frank died as the result of a brain tumor at the age of 64. For thirty years, Phil's wit and whimsy graced the pages of the San Francisco Chronicle and other papers across the country in the form of comic strips "Farley" and "Elderberries".
Phil was a great friend to Yosemite and the Yosemite Association. He served many years on the YA board, and continued as Cartoonist Emeritus following his resignation offering many spot illustrations for everything from invitations to envelopes. With YA, Phil published two collections of his work Fur and Loafing in Yosemite (1999) and Eat, Drink, and Be Hairy (2005).
Phil's spirit and humor will be greatly missed by all his fans, and certainly by everyone here at YA.
