| If Tuolumne Meadows is Open, It Must be Summer |
 |
|
Delayed nearly a month by heavy spring snowfall,
some visitor facilities at Tuolumne Meadows have
finally opened, providing gas, food and lodging
for visitors to Yosemite's high country. In a normal
year, the park service hopes to have the road open
over 9,945-foot Tioga Pass by Memorial Day. This
year the highest automobile pass in California
wasn't cleared until June 17. That's far short of
the record, though: In 1998 it didn't open until July
1. Despite the late opening, things are terrific
in Tuolumne. Read more about what's open in
the high country by reading the article from the
San Francisco Chronicle posted in our
newsroom.

Is the Sierra Nevada Older Than We Thought? |
|
|
|
The Sierra Nevada rose at least 40 million years
ago, significantly longer ago than many adult
Californians learned when they were in school,
Stanford scientists report in a finding that is likely to
prove controversial.
The traditional estimate that the Sierra is 3 million
to 5 million years old appears way too low, growing
geological evidence has revealed. In a paper in
the current issue of the journal Science, three
Stanford geoscientists base their new age estimate
on an unusual scientific technique: the analysis
of prehistoric raindrops. Learn more about the
findings that will cause people's eyes "to pop out of
their heads," by reading the article from the San
Francisco Chronicle that's posted in our
newsroom.
