  • Such A Landscape! - Such a Deal!
    .
To celebrate the imminent arrival of spring in the Sierra Nevada, we are offering our award-winning photographic book about the Brewer survey party at a remarkable price.

Entitled Such A Landscape! A Narrative of the 1864 California Geological Survey Exploration of Yosemite, Sequoia & Kings Canyon from the Diary, Field Notes, Letters & Reports of William Henry Brewer, the beautiful, oversized volume features the remarkable black-and-white photos of William Alsup, who backpacked the route of the survey and made images of what he saw.

Alsup collected William Brewer's diary, field notes, letters, and reports (many previously unpublished) from his landmark explorations of some of California's wildest terrain, then tied these various sources together with his own careful observations made over a dozen years as he traced and photographed the survey party's route.

The resulting volume is both inspired and inspiring. Such A Landscape! normally retails for $29.95 in paperback, but for a limited time we are offering it to our readers for only $19.95 - a 33% discount! If you don't have a copy of this classic of Sierran literature, now's the time to pick one up. (No member discount allowed on this item.)

Judge Clears Way for Yosemite Projects
    .
A federal judge refused to shut down more than $100 million in Yosemite Valley construction projects, saying environmental arguments for delay in a long-running lawsuit were unconvincing. Park officials, poised to begin major work this spring, had worried about another in a long line of delays.

U.S. District Court Judge Anthony W. Ishii did order Yosemite National Park to decide a limit on how many people could visit the sensitive Merced River, which runs through the glacial valley.

Some environmentalists consider the valley projects a development scheme to bring more people into the park. They believe the projects should be stopped for a year until the visitor limits are established to prevent overuse of the river and surrounding habitat. Park officials maintain that many of the projects will help the environment by restoring some areas to natural conditions while shrinking the amount of land being developed in other areas.

The valley projects are part of a $441 million overhaul that was jump-started by a large flood in 1997. Since the 1980s, officials have tried to renovate the 7- square-mile valley, encountering delay after delay because of lawsuits and a lack of funds.

Yosemite Theme for New California Quarter
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled the design of California's new quarter Monday, which shows conservationist John Muir, a California condor and Yosemite National Park's Half Dome on the coin's tails side.

More than 2 billion of the coins will be placed in national circulation in January 2005, said California State Librarian Kevin Starr.

"These three images will show California's wildlife, California's magnificent landscape and our commitment to preserving the Golden State for generations," said Schwarzenegger, unveiling a coin that emerged from thousands of designs submitted between September and November 2002.

Los Angeles graphic artist Garrett Burke, 42, designed the coin that Schwarzenegger selected from five finalists including images of sun and waves, a redwood tree, the Golden Gate Bridge and a gold panner. "I'm thrilled with the outcome," said the self-described nature enthusiast, calling Yosemite Valley and John Muir the "real stars."
